About me (in more detail): I was born in London lived there for four years and then grew up in Norwich. I studied at Reading University in England and obtained a B.A (Hons.) degree in 1993. I then studied for an MSc in International Business Economics at the University of the West of England from 1993-94. After a year working in corporate banking in London, I changed careers and studied teaching English as a foreign language at Bedford College. After that I have taught English to children and adults in England, Italy and Finland. I have spent 20 years teaching English, Italian and for the last year, Finnish in Finland. I have taught over 600 language courses in Finland to both private and public sector clients including many company directors and CEO’s. From 2010 to 2016 I was the Area Head Teacher for one of Finland’s leading language training companies. I have also worked at Summer schools for international students from 1996-2001 and I was a Course Director for courses with around 100 students and 15 staff during the last two years of that period.
I also have a lot of experience of proofreading assignments during my 20 years in Finland. I have corrected many scholarly articles for university professors from Finland and abroad and have also been involved in correcting PhD. theses.
Additionally, I have been involved in many Finnish-English translation projects for the Private and Public Sector ranging from museum exhibit descriptions to curriculum vitae. I speak Finnish fluently and achieved level 4 on the official Finnish test in 2009 as well as level C1 (written and spoken) on an AAC Global course in 2010. I can also speak Italian fluently.
My main hobby is chess. I am a member of Tammershakki chess club’s board and was responsible for the club’s junior activities and its women’s team. I also teach chess in schools as a member of Shakkilinna's (Chess Castle's) team. From 2024 I am also the Chairman of Nokia's chess club. I have coached junior players and adults in England and Finland and my own 16 year-old stepdaughter won 10 Finnish Youth and Finnish School’s Championships and played for the National Youth team. I have been Manager of the Finland junior team at the Nordic Girls' Championships (2017, 2019 and 2022), the European Youth Chess Championships (2014, 2016) and the World Youth Championships (2018). I have been a Bedfordshire County First Team player and have played for Milton Keynes Phoenix First team in the U.K National chess league (4NCL).
